What are electrical insulation films used for?
Ensuring the reliability and safety of electrical equipment is a crucial aspect in many industrial sectors.
To achieve this goal and protect various machines from electrical discharges and other hazards, electrical insulation films are widely used. What are they, what functions do they perform, and which solutions available on the market are worth recommending?
What Is an Electrical Insulation Film?
Electrical insulation films are thin, flexible materials made from dielectrics, which are non-conductive materials used for electrical insulation in various applications. They are utilized in multiple industries, and their primary functions include the following:
- preventing the flow of electricity between conductive parts;
- protecting machine components from electrical discharges;
- increasing safety by preventing accidental contact with live components;
- protecting parts from overheating, chemical damage, and mechanical wear.
In practice, insulation films act as electrical and thermal barriers. Thanks to their insulating, chemical, and mechanical properties, they ensure reliable operation of various devices and extend their lifespan.
What materials are electrical insulation films made of?
Electrical insulation films are made from dielectrics, which do not conduct electricity. The most commonly used materials include:
- Polyester (PET): Known for its excellent mechanical strength, dimensional stability, and resistance to moisture and chemicals, polyester films are used in transformers, generators, electric motors, wind turbines, and for cable insulation.
- Polyimide (PI): With high resistance to temperatures (up to 300 °C), chemicals, and beta and gamma radiation, polyimide films are used for insulating various devices, especially DC and AC motors, high-power generators, and transformers.
- Polypropylene (PP): With its low density and moisture absorption, polypropylene is ideal for producing industrial films used in capacitors and for cable and winding insulation.
What Are Electrical Insulation Films Used For?
As electrical and thermal barriers, insulation films are suitable for various industrial sectors. Depending on the type, they can be used for insulation in:
- transformers and electric motors;
- capacitors and generators;
- batteries and accumulators;
- printed circuit boards;
- cables and wires;
- wind turbines and photovoltaic systems.
The magnificent properties of insulation films make them essential components in the design and construction of various electrical devices.
Which electrical insulation films should you choose?
At Electris, we manufacture various insulation components from electrical insulation films, customized to the needs and specifications of our clients. Our offerings include well-known and trusted products such as Mylar® and Nomex®.
Mylar® Electrical Insulation Film
Mylar® is a polyester film widely used in electronics and many industrial sectors. Available in various thicknesses (190 μm, 250 μm, 300 μm, 350 μm, 500 μm), it boasts several advantages:
- Due to its minimal dielectric strength reduction with increasing temperature, it can function as an insulator in high-temperature environments (up to 105 °C);
- It is chemically stable and resistant to stretching, moisture, and solvents;
- It offers excellent electrical, chemical, and physical properties;
As its thickness increases (above 190 μm), it becomes more opaque and less transparent.
These properties make Mylar® insulation films ideal for use in transformers, generators, electric motors, wind turbines, and hybrid systems, providing reliable electrical and thermal insulation.
Nomex® Electrical Insulation Film
Another product we use and offer to our clients is Nomex® insulation paper. Made from a blend of polyamide flakes and fibers, Nomex® is characterized by:
- flame resistance;
- excellent dielectric and mechanical strength;
- resistance to extreme temperatures as well as beta and gamma radiation;
- high rigidity.
As a result, Nomex® insulation film is ideal for insulating various devices, such as DC and AC motors, generators, transformers, and reactors. It is available in different thicknesses (from 0.05 to 0.76 mm).
